Blu-Ray Review

FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION is available to purchase on blu-ray at MovieZyng.com and by clicking the image above.
In 2006, director Christopher Guest reunited with his usual cast regulars from A MIGHTY WIND, BEST IN SHOW and WAITING FOR GUFFMAN to focus his legendary lampooning skills on the business of Hollywood - specifically, the absurdity that revolves around the quest for oscar buzz, even if it's far from deserved!
FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION is even more enjoyable now than when it was first released, as the current filmic landscape is sadly devoid of these types of satires and yet its theme is as relevant to modern hollywood as ever.
The heart of the film is Catherine O'Hara's Marilyn Hack, a washed up actress who ends up garnering oscar buzz for her performance portraying a homesick mother in a saccharine, ridiculous melodramatic film called HOME FOR PURIM. The oscar buzz for her performance ignites a chain reaction that turns the whole project into a major awards season contender. O'Hara is desperate, insecure, vain and untalented, yet she rides out her newfound attention to the fullest - preparing for her newfound career jump by transforming herself with tacky makeup, grotesque plastic surgery and a bad spray tan.
Guest adeptly pokes fun at how easy it is to change an entire industry's perception of either an actor, a script or a film as a whole if enough believe in, or starting proclaiming the same overblown delusions. Although dated in how it portrays some aspects of the industry, the concept was prophetic as there are a slew of recent films that seem to gain praise that's unjustified and leaves me mystified.
FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION is another gem in Christopher Guest's stellar comedic filmography and made me miss seeing the type of mockumentary style affair that he is so well associated with. I was recently thrilled to learn that Rob Reiner has filmed SPINAL TAP 2, which is set to release next summer, with Guest reprising his role from the original film. I am hoping for a new 4K release of the original THIS IS SPINAL TAP in the near future.
The blu-ray transfer is perfect and features a great audio commentary from Christopher Guest and actor/co-writer Eugene Levy. There is also around 30 minutes of unused (possibly improvised material) not included in the final cut of the film. This is a great Warner Archive release that any comedy fan should add to their collection!
