From Vegas...

When you’ve got them dancing in the aisles, I’d say you have a hit concert. Thus it was with the Neville Brothers performing at Sam’s Town Live, the off-strip place to be in Las Vegas. Their devoted followers filled the auditorium singing, shouting, clapping, and even waving handkerchiefs in New Orleans fashion.

The Neville Brothers, Art, Charles, Cyril, and Aaron are supported by five other excellent musicians, many of whom have been performing with them for years. While some of them began playing earlier, the family group first formed as The Wild Tchoupitoulas in 1976. It was a name taken from their uncle Jolly who was a fabled Mardi Gras Indian Chief.

Their New Orleans upbringing bleeds through their unique style, a cross of rock and roll and rhythm and blues, intermingled with unmistakable Louisiana jazz from the French Quarter. They have coalesced around Art Neville, the oldest brother whose keyboard wizardry earned him the title of Poppa Funk. To remind you how proud he is of that, Art has it emblazoned across the front of the stage. As founder, Art has been performing for over four decades and can reach back to their legacy or be as contemporary as today.

Of course, it’s Aaron Neville who nearly steals the show with his gorgeous voice and star presence. He does his Grammy-winning hits (recorded with Linda Ronstadt and Trisha Yearwood), as well as his classic 1966 ballad, “Tell It Like It Is.”

In the 1980s the Neville Brothers won two Grammys for “Fiyo on the Bayou” (1981) and “Yellow Moon” (1989). Having a sense of humor, they close the show with something still familiar since it debuted in the 1950s: it starts with M-I-C-K-E-Y-and you know the rest.

If you’re looking for a show with high energy, and a lot of soul, the Neville Brothers are it. Watch for them to return to Sam’s Town Live!, or when appearing near you. Remember, when in Las Vegas, be sure to check and see what is playing at Sam’s Town.
